Barbara Hurka of North East, Md., has been a jewelry artisan since 2000. The self-taught 67-year-old says making beautiful jewelry is rewarding and less stressful than her previous job. “I worked in the car business,” Artiswatched crafters make jewelry. “I thought, ‘That would be lot less stressful.’”

While vacationing in Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Hurka bought books and previously used tools to hone her craft. She uses sheet silver and wiring to create pendants, rings and bracelets. About 10 years ago she started making chains, and she has always used sterling silver. “I did gold work years ago, but it wasn’t as popular as the silver pieces.”

Hurka recently started using chain mail. “Which originated with medieval knights,” she says. Hurka also enjoys working with natural elements such as stone. “Stones inspire me.” So what’s popular in jewelry today? “Big tassels, white metals,” she says.

Hurka works with stainless steel, aluminum, brass, bronze and copper. She loves to work, but she tries not to overdo it. As she puts it, “I’m now retired, so I work until I’m tired.”
